Dr. Norman Wood is a native West Virginian and began his many careers as an Iron Worker and helped build the I-470 bridge across the Ohio River at Wheeling West Virginia. He knows what it feels like to walk an I-beam. Dr. Wood then went into law enforcement, and as a West Virginia State Trooper, he was one of the original members of the WV State Police Tactical Team. Later in 1988, as a Special Agent for the U.S. Customs Service, he made the largest drug seizure in U.S. history while assigned to the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force, San Francisco, CA. In 1993, he decided to attend medical school after 16 years in law enforcement. He graduated with honors and in 1998 during his residency training at the Ohio Valley Medical Center, he fell 20 feet out of a tree at his family farm, breaking his pelvis in two places as well as his left arm. He was not wearing a fall arrest harness.
"When you can't walk for four months, it gives you a lot of time to think." Dr. Wood states - and his idea to revolutionize fall safety systems was thus born. During his recovery as well as currently, Dr. Wood has been continuously striving to develop different safety products to make elevated activities such as Home/Office Fire Escape, Construction, Fire Fighting, EMS/ Rescue, Military, Police Tactical and Treestand Hunting safer. He formed Mountaineer Sports in 2007 and Elevated Safety Systems in 2009. He has also published his article, Suspension Trauma: A Lethal Cascade of Events on FallSafety.com and in safety trade magazines.
In 2009, Dr. Wood finished his long term project, the Rescue One CDS (Controlled Descent System) Harness, a new revolutionary full body safety harness that eliminates serious injury or death from suspension trauma. The US Patented Rescue One CDS allows the user to safely and quickly lower themselves to the ground if a fall has occurred and recovery back to a standing position is not possible. Dr. Wood currently has four awarded US Patents for fall safety designs; #8,177,026, #8,651,235, #8,678,134, and #D684,845. and several Patent Pending.
Dr. Wood has continued his research, development and testing over the past twenty-five years. This persistence has resulted in the most advanced safety harnesses in existence; the NFPA FireEscape Harness, the Survivor Harness, the Rescue One EDS (Emergency Descent System) Harness, Construction and Hunting Models, and the FireEscape EDS Harness for home and office. "I am so confident in these harnesses that I will now go into the woods by myself, set up a camera and film myself falling out of a treestand and lowering myself to the ground. No one for miles and no rescue available. This is how confident I am in the EDS Harnesses. I will not sell anything that I am not willing to put my own life in jeopardy in its use." Dr. Norman Wood
Dr. Wood is the recognized national and international expert on Suspension Trauma and has lectured for OSHA, Mine Safety and Health Administration, various State, Federal and local organizations, and medical conferences.
